"Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize."

- "The International" by Eugène Pottier.

The Crescent Pact, Syrians/Iraqis, Mesopotamians, or Socialists for short, are a communist supporters in Middle East who are trying to earn their place in the large family of Soviet Socialist Republics by developing their own modern weapons, but still buying most of their equipment from Soviet Union to wage war with GLA and the Coalition. Minor faction created by Tim the Grim Reaper.

Different Hues

Before World War II, Syria and Iraq were controlled by France and Great Britain, respectively, despite many attempts of both states to gain independence. Even during the war, when the Soviets and Allies clashed across Europe, the Arab peoples wanted freedom. At this time there were the first signs of Allies' methods of "keeping the peace" with more harsh and unfeeling means. It forced back the tide, and eventually the people returned control of the European nations, even enjoying the prosperity and comfort of the Western way of life. The people started using cars instead of horses and camels, buying televisions and three-piece suits. Democracy was also on the march, the rights of women improving, though they had to still cover their faces in many nations. The oil reserves in the region brought economic growth and stability, making many oil magnates rich. This also made it a strategic location, prompting Allies to keep the Arabians happy, ostensibly keeping them on the side of capitalism.

However, it all changed when World War II started. The Soviets always realized the importance of the Arabian Peninsula, so when Stalin sent the Red Army into Europe, a contingent of several corps were sent into the Middle East to cut off the oil fields and then drive into North Africa to secure dominance over the Mediterranean. Unlike Europe, where despite the surprise from the Soviet "blitzkrieg", nations still used their factories and modern weapons to slow the Russians down, the former colonies were not as fortunate. Possessing only outdated vehicles and aircraft, the Soviets quickly sacked the Middle East down to the Egypt, conquering the majority of the oil fields in the region.

The Allies, realizing too late their supplies had been undefended, didn't even attempt any sort of attack to reclaim these lands. Instead, the majority of efforts focused on the African and Anatolian fronts, far from the much of the population of the Middle East. The Arabians were at first hopeful that Allies will free them, but it soon changed into sense of betrayal. They were sacrificed, to protect their domains in North Africa and the Turkey. When the Syrians and Iraqis realized that the Allies cared only for their lands, they finally understood why Iran had joined the Soviets so readily. New communist and socialist parties started spreading across the region, and with the decreasing popularity and preferences of the democratic parties, the positions on the board had changed. In some countries the Allies still had support, in other it was even.

Ringings of Revolution

When World War II ended, the situation in Middle East changed dramatically. The Allies, seeing the loss in this region, only remotely attempted to heal their reputation, making the way for Arabians to finally declare their own countries, as they wanted since Europeans took control of them.

This newly-acquired freedom gave way to the left-wing, and soon in Syria after the elections the Syrian & Iraqi (also known as the Mesopotamian) Socialist Party won, and with the Communist Worker's Party began the transformation of the state as an Arabian model of the Soviet Union, as well as offering the pro-Allied factions to stay if they will respect the new rule, or freely leave wherever they want. Eastern Iraq however, was taken by the rising fundamentalist movement that could be considered an ancestor of the GLA, while a pro-capitalist man declared himself the King of Southern Iraq, and so for a few months Iraq was divided into three.

To aid their fellow communists, the Iranians eventually drove in and liberated eastern Iraq from the GLA, reuniting one part of the once divided nation. The Mesopotamian Socialist party, elated, met up with the Iranians to propose the formation of an "Crescent Pact". The many other supporters of the new faction across the Middle East started forming small splinter cells to help at least contain the GLA, and bring stability to all people of the region, and the warm waiting hands of their Soviet allies.

The Syrians, being the most stable state in the alliance, started developing new technologies and weapons to support the new communist push into the Saudi Peninsula, using both Soviet, French, and British equipment, modernizing them to keep up and give them edge against the absolutely outdated enemy that was to come in the inevitable rematch between the swiftly growing communist bloc and the increasingly unified Allied Nations. Bolstered by a now partially united Iraq and Iran, the Crescent Pact looked southwards to it's capitalist and royalist adversary; the Coalition of Arabian Monarchies, now joined by Saudi Arabia.

Deciding Round

Within hours of a Soviet plane being shot down by the Polish, a third world war was declared. But the Allies would not be fighting Stalin's Red Army, with its uneducated conscripts, brutal commissars and the Black Guard that are far worse. They were fighting the World Socialist Alliance created by Cherdenko, a humane army that sought to win the hearts and minds of its adversaries that had altered numerous design philosophies for its soldiers' benefit, and had hugely mechanized its industry was now the foe that faced the Allies.

The Crescent Pact, now ready to prove its part in the war, joined with the Soviet Middle Eastern theater command in helping to overrun the Arab world as well as try to knock Turkey out of the war as swiftly as possible. Though the Turks held for a time, when Soviet Balkan front troops struck at Thrace and then landed on Bodrum, the Socialists were able to quickly accomplish their first goal.

Against the Indians, the socialist governments needed only to hold against them as the Communist Chinese and Soviet Central Asian fronts planned to push through the mountain ranges once the European, African, and Middle Eastern Allies were crushed and the American Allies were no longer in a position to provide aid. Even India's vast hordes couldn't successfully push against all three communist powers through such abysmal terrain, and it seemed inevitable that soon it would be crushed once forces could be allocated.

Against the Coalition, they were instrumental in driving through the forces arrayed against Lenin's promise. With the advantage in surprise, preparation, and materiel superiority, they and their Soviet allies drove the Coalition into the Southern parts of the Arabian peninsula and away from their oil fields in the east, all while helping sweep right through Northern Africa in a dash to the Atlantic Ocean to link up with communist west African forces driving North. The impenetrable fortress nation of Kuwait was encircled and left to starve, and all seemed set for the end of Arabian monarchism.

Driving all the way to the Atlantic, it seemed that Communism's triumph was at this point inevitable. But everyone's priorities were forced into a rude paradigm shift when the Empire made its dream of world conquest known. Suddenly the Soviet hinterland, once thought safe and secure, became the avenue of a vicious assault by the Empire, which few paid attention to outside of it's intervention in World War II against Stalin, Kim Il-Sung, and Mao, or its long removed defeat in the Russo-Japanese war.

Even Leningrad and Stalingrad themselves were struck, and while the Allies were certainly not free of their own attacks as targets as far west as Gibraltar and as far east as Los Angeles all suffered attacks and southern Asia became the target of a gargantuan assault, it was the Soviets whom the Empire saw as their primary target. Rushing to help their allies against the Empire as the tide in North Africa had already started turning, the Socialists were made the target of a vicious counter-attack by the Coalition backed by Commonwealth (primarily Pakistani), American, and South African reinforcements while Turkey was brought back into the war under the Allied flag by a massive landing from the Mediterranean with Syndicate aid.

Leaving forces in North Africa cut off by the counter-attack to dry, the Socialists found their middle eastern gains being reversed as they tried desperately to hold onto what they had taken and in the years of the retreat, found themselves pressed back to Iraq. But finally, the Socialists drew a line in the sand. With a direct line to the manpower hubs of their homelands, they managed to both prevent the Coalition's planned invasion of their lands and the installation of monarchies in their countries, and managed to keep Iraq intact.

Bizarre Iron Triangle

When the war finally ended, though the Socialists made little gains compared to the Soviets who had taken eastern Europe, or the South American Socialists who had brought the Southern Cone into the Comintern, they felt good about themselves. The Coalition was denied a chance to install unwanted monarchies, Iraq was reunited, and they avoided virtual annihilation like the Red Chinese. But while no one can claim to have won the war (though the Empire certainly seemed to be the worst off party), socialism retained its stronghold in the Middle East.

Now the Socialist Government continues to secure its border with India and has focused its war machine more towards combating the Global Liberation Army, which sees the spread of communism as a threat to their faith and traditions, all while preparing for a rematch against the Coalition. However, the world is a much stranger place than it had been before the war. Rather than the comforting red carpet of the vast holdings of Communist China, now lay mostly communist bandits, petty blue Chinese fiefdoms, mutants, poison, and the frightening power of Green China.

Now the Socialist Government's attention is increasingly called to the largely Catholic areas of Palestine as GLA formations seem to crash into the area time and time again without rhyme or reason beyond their status as Christian nations, and them repeatedly being wiped out with nary a second word that made any sense. Now, the tales of purple robots and saucer-riding aliens are more persistent than ever. The Syndicate and the League both vie for control of Africa more fiercely than ever before, and both the Pact and the League hope to appeal to a mutual foe/rival in the GLA and India to court their aid. Even the United States, once a united and staunch foe of communism, is essentially a failed state in an increasingly jumbled and confusing civil war.

The world has changed, but the Socialists continue to hold strong to the promise of Marx, Engels, and Lenin, that the way of the Reds is the way that all the world shall soon follow. Workers of the world, unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains!

Immortal The basic rank and file trooper of the Socialists, the Immortal is armed with a standard (if outdated) ADK-45 assault rifle. Their extensive weapons training (to make up for their lack of manpower like Soviet Union) means that they fire their weapon in three-round burst fire, with increased accuracy over a conscript and higher rate of suppression than the rest. In the close quarters the troopers are armed with retractable spears which they are trained to use, killing enemy infantry in slightly longer ranges than enemies with swords, and can run to the garrisoned structures and clear them out using these long melee weapons.
Cebeci Warrior A military flak jacket, white turban and scarf, a large backpacks with dual rocket launchers; this is the simple description of the Cebeci Warriors. These men are half-soldiers, half-engineers, maintaining the Socialists' weapons and vehicles, and when going to battle carrying box-like two-shot rocket launchers using RPGL ammunition against armored targets and structures. Both rockets can be fired simultaneously, but this will knock down the Cebeci, forcing him to stand up and reload, but this will deliver far more damage.
Pikeman Using MANPADS to shoot down passing aircraft, Pikemen fire direct penetration missiles that can burst through armor but have a higher chance of missing the target altogether.
Satrap Officers in the Desert Corps, satraps also pack special shotguns firing fin-stabilized slugs for long range and enough hitting power to knock an enemy on their buttocks.
Bogatyr Heavy-Duty Truck Large trucks purchased from Soviet Union, Bogatyrs were localized for the Middle East's environment and are used for carrying supplies and ore. The large flatbed and strong engine enables to carry more cargo than other trucks, if at slightly slower pace, but Socialists mounted a small machine gun behind the cabin to protect it from any ambush of GLA rebels (or even Coalition raids). When the commander has more trucks than he needs for transporting ore, the soldiers can load them up with crates with all sorts of ammunition, spare parts, fuel tanks which would be invaluable on the battlefield.
Mattock Tank Licensed Syrian-produced T-40 Sokha, the Mattock is a fast and maneuverable tank that can smoothly move through the desert and engage enemy armor. Inferior to modern tanks in firepower and armor, Mattock is easy to produce and armed with 76mm gun, and can outmaneuver and attack an enemy tank's weak spots to win the day. When friendly infantry is nearby, the Mattock offers two soldiers to be carried on inside, though they can't fire out at all.
Raider APC The APC made by converting a civilian truck into an armored vehicle, the Raider is armed with pair of light machine guns which need to be manned by transported infantry to fire. It is quick enough to keep up with Mattock tanks and deliver the infantry to the battlefield, though it's not even armored compared to a tank. When destroyed, Raider becomes an immobile bunker, allowing all infantry inside to fire out. This state can't be reversed.
Hare Tank Hunter Armed with two large missile launchers, Hare is a converted British Covenant cruiser tank designed to hunt armored targets, quickly get to the flanks and target the weak rear. The design required a large space on the back to house the missiles, making the launchers turn only in 90 degree, making it best when used for flanking engagements. The guided missile it fires penetrates armor before detonating and thus ignores the effects of directional armor, inflicting the same amount of damage no matter where it hits. When ordered, the tank commander can use the supercharger built into the engine to boost the tank's speed for a short time, at the expense of maneuverability. The friendly infantry which will be nearby the tank destroyer can pick up ammunition from spare ammo boxes kept on the hull, increasing their fire rate.
IconTheocracy.png Grudge AAA Truck With the deposit of Soviet Matryoshka missiles delivered from Iran, the Syrians were able to effectively mount the missiles on a flatbed of a truck, creating a potent long-range anti-aircraft weapon system. The Grudge needs to deploy to fire the missiles with components of Matryoshkas vertically (similarly to V4) before the tracking system kicks in and guides the missile to its intended target. This process makes it vulnerable to all ground forces, not being able to target and engage them in any way, and have to unpack to drive away, if its slow movement gets it to safety. Nearby infantry and light-medium vehicles receives bonus to their defense as Grudge drivers always carry some additional sandbags and shovels for making foxholes.
Retaliation Howitzer Several Rhino Tanks which Syria obtained were converted into turreted SPGs, widening the tracks and incorporating a turret with 152mm howitzer to bombard enemy units with shrapnel shells. On detonation, the shrapnel knocks down infantry in wide radius and outright kills those unlucky ones close to the detonation. For its formidable anti-infantry firepower, it suffers against heavily-armored vehicles and reinforced structures (against these it can use high explosive ammunition). An unique trait is that engineers have modified the firing mechanism so that for a short amount of time, the gun crew can depress the barrel and use the cannon as a long-range shotgun. It's power and range in this configuration are not to be underestimated. The shrapnel shells in any mode degarrison buildings.
Lion Heavy Tank Solely produced by the Syrians (but designed with the help of the Soviets) to follow the lighter tanks and give them support, the Lion is a fast (despite its designation and size) and strong vehicle, able to compete with any MBT on equal terms. To achieve the high speed, armor thickness is lower than expected, utilizing a sloped armor more than current Soviet tanks use to deflect most incoming shots, and return fire on the enemy with a potent 130mm gun. If the situation gets too hot, the Lion tank commanders are authorized to fall back and leak a portion of their fuel reserves behind and then set it ablaze, making a lethal flame wall. However, once this is done, the tank is more slower for a period of time before refueling.
Super-Hind Helicopter Gunship The Syrian version of the Soviet Hind-D went through complete overhaul and redesign to accommodate the wing pylons with four more machine guns along with the Gatling gun on the nose to tear apart all infantry and light vehicles in seconds. As a field option, there is a kit distributed to the helipads to rearm Super-Hind with the 57mm fixed cannon on the belly, replacing the Gatling gun, and the machine guns replaced with unguided missile launchers, to change its role into dedicated anti-armor. The cost of this kit is as expensive as Super-Hind itself, and cant be changed back.

Dune Fortress The nerve center of Socialist forces, these fortresses are hastily built in deserts to keep an area under Pact control, housing platoons of soldiers in the underground sections along with all vehicles dispatched to the area.
Steelworks The Bogatyr trucks brings their cargo in at the works, where the ore is processed and then converted to fund the Socialist efforts.
Regimental Fighter Port When the aerial support is available to the communist Arabian forces, Regimental Fighter Ports are utilized by the Super Hinds and when the Iranian Air Force arrives, for their MiGs. Soviet Union exported to them their repair drones, assigning one to each airpad for maintenance of helicopters and fighters.
Crescent Sentry Gun A modified Soviet Sentry Gun that has gotten increased elevation and replaces the twin 14.5mm guns with twin 23mm autocannons and is automated by the same processes that allow Drones to remain automated.
Flak Turret A single large 130mm flak gun, the Flak Turret is highly destructive against groups of enemy aircraft and with a high rate of fire thanks to a great autoloading system. The explosive flak shells are particularly deadly against bunched up fixed wing aircraft, though if they need to; they'll load up and fire more solid shells to deal with heavier aircraft
Tesla Spire These permanent Tesla Coils are both better armored and better charged than the MCV set up Tesla Coils in Soviet bases. Indeed, they can actually lash out thrice every time they fire, or fire much less damaging but vehicle paralyzing bolts to prevent enemies from getting anywhere.
Field Gun Emplacement The Socialists are fond of placing a battery of three large 130mm field guns down to secure the area from any rebel attacks. Partially dug in and surrounded by a sand bags with camo netting above, the emplacement is well-protected against enemy fire, if larger than standard defenses, giving it enough time to destroy armored targets from long distances by crushing their armor beneath the weight of their mighty shells, while aircraft can be aimed at by the skilled crew to be blasted with flak shells. Enemy infantry are hardly safe either, as the Socialists added attached machine guns to scythe down approaching infantry.

Iranian Red Army Reinforcements

When Iraqis and Syrians are in trouble, the Iranian Red Army can dispatch a unit of specialized warriors and vehicles via North Iraq. While technically part of the greater Soviet armed forces, Iranian forces are more customized for this region and the combat that takes place here, but still keep most of the Soviet top weapons in the stores.

Machine Gunner The Iranian equivalent of Soviet Grenadiers, Machine Gunners are a regular troops who receive proper training and equipment. They are armed with RDP light machine guns. These men are trained to handle the massive recoil, cutting down all the enemies efficiently. They do, however, need few seconds to set up and take a stance before being able to fire. When the suppressive fire is needed, Machine Gunners can unload their whole magazine against the enemy position up ahead, suppressing anyone in the cone-shaped area, if the damage dealt and accuracy is lesser than when firing with aim.
A/C Trooper Using a cheaper form of battlesuit than the mainstream Tesla Trooper, the A/C Trooper doesn't have enough juice to create an EMP effect and their Tesla weapon is somewhat weaker than the normal Tesla trooper, but the A/C Trooper can emit a powerful pulse that affects the feet and the engines of nearby units, slowing them to a drag at the cost of the
Flak Transport A concept which was previously used by Cherdenko in Leningrad, Iran took a military half-track transports and fitted flak cannons from a defense turret to combat any aerial opposition and transport their infantry on the field. The guns are strong, but the armor protection is not as tough, even with the application of additional armor.
Rhino Tank The bedrock of the Red Army, the Rhino Tank serves in Iranian armed forces as a main battle tank, only modified for the intense heat instead of arctic colds (heaters being replaced by air-conditioners). Seeing the hit-and-run attacks of the GLA on their motor pools and columns, Iranians added reactive armor plates on the hull and chassis, similar to those of Soviet Ore Collectors, and smoke grenade launchers to create smokescreen; an ideal cover for escape, or fast approach to close range combat where GLA has no chance.
Terminator Tank The mighty tank that barely missed the end of the World War II, the Termiantor is feared by every soldier that faces the Soviet Union, bane to all Allied armor divisions. The two massive cannons erase vehicles and structures from the face of the Earth, and two missile launchers clear the skies of all air targets. Even then, the crew can load high-explosive incendiary shells to the main guns to reduce entire divisions to ash, infantry and vehicles alike. Iran prefers to conserve these expensive behemoths which are mostly kept in reserve, but if the situation is critical, they will roll out and crush.
Vulture MiG Fighter The standard air superiority fighter of the Union now employed by Iran, with the necessary localized improvements. But the changes don't end with sand filters. This MiG Fighter was turned into a multi-role, replacing the Matryoshka missiles with Cheburashka missiles, which can be used on both air and ground targets due to power limitations. These changes earned it the name "Vulture", and Iranian pilots quickly learned how to use these planes to protect the air and ground.
